The model 701C is a high-power, bi-phase stimulator that can provide positive, negative or alternating (bi-phase) pulses of up to 80V at up to 1 ampere of current. The high power output makes this stimulator ideal for field stimulation of muscle in a bath.

The stimulator can output either constant current pulses (from 0.4 milliamp to 1 amp) or constant voltage pulses (from 0 to 80 volts).  The output current or voltage is set using a range selector switch and a graduated potentiometer, both located on the front panel.

The stimulator includes three output monitors to allow the researcher to monitor the timing (Sync Monitor) the voltage (V Monitor) or the current (I Monitor).

The stimulator provides two trigger methods:

  1. Pulse Trigger – the stimulator produces output pulses that match the timing and duration of the Pulse Trigger Input. This capability of "following" the input allows the stimulator to easily be controlled by a computer.  The width and frequency of the stimulator's output pulses follow the width and frequency of the Pulse Trigger Input.
  2. Manual Trigger – A single pulse of 1.25 milliseconds duration is produced when the Manual Trigger Switch is pressed or held. Either a momentary push or a sustained hold of the trigger button will issue just a single pulse.

Aurora Scientific Inc. has two software products available (600A Digital Controller and Dynamic Muscle Control (DMC) software) that provide stimulator output control via simple on-screen controls. Precise timing and synchronization of stimulation and muscle lever control is assured when you combine our software control programs with a 701C stimulator. Each program provides complete control of all timing parameters affecting muscle stimulation including: pulse width, pulse frequency (pulse trains), train frequency and train duration.

A unique feature of the 701C stimulator is the Pulse Phase Switch that is used to set the polarity of the output pulses. The stimulator can be set to generate only positive pulses, only negative pulses, or pulses of alternating (positive then negative) bi-phase polarity. These pulses are all referenced to the chassis ground. Operation in the Bi-Phase mode allows the net current through the muscle bath to be zero. This produces better muscle stimulation as it minimizes corrosion of the stimulation electrodes and the potential release of heavy metals into the bath.

The 701C stimulator is housed in a half rack-mount steel and aluminum enclosure. All controls are located on the front panel along with two LEDs, one that indicates the power is on and the other flashes each time an output pulse is issued. This provides easy verification of correct operation.
