Series 400A Force Transducers

Instruments for measuring the dynamic physical properties of muscles and connective tissues.

400A Series Force Transducers were designed for applications where fast response, high resolution, very low compliance, or the visco-elastic properties of a sample are important.

All models in the 400A series are complete ready-to-use instruments which provide a high-level analog output as soon as the sample is attached. The transducers are rugged, compared with semi-conductor strain gauges, and they are repairable.

Models are available with force resolutions to 10 nN (1 microgram) and others with usable frequency response to 4 kHz. The seven models in the series cover the force range from 0.5 mN full scale to 1000.0 mN. Further details and specifications for all models are given below.

Features

  • Force ranges from 0.5 mN (50 mg) to 1000.0 mN (100 gm)
  • Resolution to 10 nN (1 microgram)
  • Frequency response to 4 kHz
  • Extremely low compliance
  • Excellent thermal stability
  • Minimal sensitivity to vibration and electrical interference
  • High output signal
  • Bi-directional force capability
  • Rugged and repairable
  • Robust
  • 1x, 5x, 10x gain settings
  • Digital output display
  • 1/2 rack-mountable

The design is based on two variable displacement capacitors formed from cantilevered, quartz beams. The load is attached to the active beam while the other beam acts as a reference. The reference beam, identical in size and construction to the active one, nullifies most ambient vibrations and electrical interference. This unique design results in excellent thermal stability and allows the instrument to operate without unusual or troublesome laboratory techniques. The low compliance of the quartz beams means there is essentially no motion in the sample being tested.
